What is the effect of lighting the world day and night on global warming?
Posted on July 09, 2010 by Ed
I come to believe that if each light bulb emits 100v of heat each night, and there are nillions of bulbs on plannet earth, plus the sun heat, the world must get warmer. God made parts of the world to be warmed during dar and rest at night. Lighting the world day and night is agaist nature.
My out door lights are solar powered leds. I use led lamps in my office.
The effect is people not being killed or injured by crime or not seeing where they are going.
Living past 30 years is unnatural.
Surviving child birth is unnatural.
Small dogs are unnatural.
Surviving an infection is unnatural.
Computers are unnatural.
I bet the astronomers would like this idea.

There is no effect. Our puny lighting is insignificant. The light of even the strongest wattage bulb such as construction or stage lighting rolls off quickly. From only a few feet away, you cannot detect the warmth of a bulb.

The electricity to light these bulbs is produced mostly by fossil fuels which create CO2, and contribute to global warming. Much of the lighting is unnecessary and wasteful.

Your back yard pool or garden fountain cause more potential warming than your lights do. AGW proponents never studied science and so missed out on the fact that warming only happens during conditions of high humidity. When humidity is low things cool off fast.

Well energy usage and wastage is a very serious issue, even if we use energy efficient light bulbs, producing energy is fairly expensive and so conservation is the best answer. This applies not just to energy but to water as well. Water too thought to be in abundant supply until recently is now becoming a scarce resource in many parts of the world. It is time we began conservation and for some excellent tips on water conservation please visit http://www.bewaterwise.com/tips01.html

Lighting the world day and night is against nature, in some sense, and it has some negative impacts on society and the environment. It keeps up stress levels, without allowing people the real peace of a dark night. It is always daylight, and things are always happening. It inhibits our sense of wonder as we look to the millions of stars and feel so small. Today, few people can ever see more than a couple dozen stars, and it has a real negative impact on astronomy. It causes problems for some animals that come out a twilight, who get confused, or animals that hide at night by use of the dark, who are now visible all the time.
But, regarding global warming, even the most shrill alarmist would admit that the impact is very minor. And, with a light bulb, most of that energy does get emitted safely into space, so there isn’t so much to worry about.

this is very helpful because it makes the sky get clearer and release gases into space.

No I don’t really think lighting would contribute to Global Warming. It’s such a small factor and besides, the stuff people are doing these days to help "Go Green" kinda just gets rid of anything the lighting may do if it did do harm.
But the Global warming that we’ve had recently could actually be a good thing. Temperatures have been dropping and it’s be theorized that if global warming did not happen, we might have had a mini ice age. Besides, who says it even is global warming? There have been hot seasons and there have been cold seasons. It’s all just part of the cycle Earth goes through.
Oh and Slaps… I completely agree with you. There’s been many a time where I’ve tried to look at the stars but with all the lights around there’s nothing to see.

The thermal efficiency of a modern fossil-fueled power plant is a little better than 50%, so about 1/2 the power used for the lighting got wasted at the power plant. We could drop this wastage by about 75% by going to more efficient LED or cold-florescent lighting. We would also save money by doing so.
The light that you see in the satellite images has already escaped from the earth’s atmosphere, so it makes no contribution to global warming beyond what was lost as heat at the powerplant. It does disrupt astronomer’s views as well as upsetting bird and animal migration pattern and other behaviors. Where we need the light, we could again prevent wastage and save money by putting better reflectors on the lights so they shine only where we want them.
We can’t do much about what god has wrought, nor do I think that any of us has a very good idea what her intentions are. We can, however, screw with nature a lot less and save ourselves a lot of money by doing what WE want precisely and without gratuitous waste.

I love it when people use the term "fossil fuels" !
Look there were never enuff Dinosaurs on this planet to make all the "fossil fuels" that we have used. Oil is a natural occuring product of this planet just like water and air !
The only thing "fossil" about it is that so many people still believe in it !

"Lighting the world day and night is agaist nature." Guess what, the Sun shines on the earth night and day. The effect of all the light bulbs is nil compared to the Sun. Why are you sure "Lighting the world day and night is agaist nature?" You need to go have some fun. The earth will be here for a few billion more years.
Now with space telescopes like Hubble, the effect of "night light" on astronomy is very limited.

you are correct,
maybe we should light the night with fire. Fire is natural, given to us by God.
that should solve the problem

The risk is maybe the light will penetrate into your skull and then you might actually wake up. LoL
just kidding, Not!

Nil.
I’m sure that the bees that are buzzing in the state of Texas on a summer evening create as much heat as all those lightbulbs. No one is upset about the bees.
