What type of lighting does live rock need?
Posted on July 21, 2010 by Ed
I want to make my 30 gallon a little nano reef tank but at the moment i’m planning fish only with live rock. So does live rock need that full spectrum lighting to grow or does it go fine under just your average fluro aquarium lights?
People i know what live rock is and when i say ‘grow’ i would’ve thought you understood that people mean the organisms on the rock.
Live rock is actually not alive and does not grow. Live rock is dead pieces of coral that contain living organisms such as algae, tiny crustaceans, and beneficial bacteria.
It needs no special lighting.
Remember to cure your live rock before adding anything else to your tank! For more information, see this quick guide to setting up: http://liveaquaria.com/PIC/article.cfm?aid=39

Tom Smith is correct for the most part. It does not grow, exactly, but has things on it that grow. Some live rock has some nice coraline algae on it that benefits from some light. With no light, the beneficial bacteria might be OK, but the rock will lose all its nice color!
The average fluorescent lights will be fine in most cases, with only minimal color loss.
