    @MidoriNoSaru Each …
@MidoriNoSaru Each light modifier gives a different result. BD is “different” from umbrella. Not better, but different. It’s just a personal taste. An umbrella would look similar, but not exactly the same.

The rim lights had 40 degree grids inside them.

Great video! Just a couple of questions – Why would one use a beauty dish and not a reflective umbrella? Are the lights at the side gridded?

    The beauty dish is …
The beauty dish is a light modifier that is put onto a Profoto “flash”. The flash is therefore “inside” the beauty dish. If you were buying the setup, you would need to buy both a beauty dish and a “flash” (commonly called a Strobe).

The light is not really soft. A beauty dish always creates shadows on the model’s face. For soft light use a large umbrella or a softbox.

Also, when a light is close to a model, it is softer than when the light is farther away from the model.

    Wait, does the …
Wait, does the beauty dish actually have
a flash in it? Meaning if the shutter button was released, that’s when the flash projects light? Or is the beauty dish connected with a bulb already exposing light? Is there an external flash or is the beauty dish, THE FLASH?

I dont get how the light can be so soft if it’s directly next to the model..please explain?

Thanks for getting back to me. Basically, I have a Nikon SB-900 flashgun, and I was wondering if I can use that with the beauty dish shell and trigger the flash with each shot from my camera. Or do you have to get a flash that is the same brand (i.e. Profoto) to put inside the beauty dish? Sorry for the very basic questions.

    Not sure I …
Not sure I understand the question, but in the set up where the dish is directly in front of Jivanta the “flash” is coming from inside the beauty dish.

I am using a Profoto head inside the Profoto beauty dish.

Great video. Just a question: where is the flash coming from in the straight-on setup (beauty dish directly in front of Jivanta)? Also, what lights are being used in the beauty dish?

Nice presentation, i think the model actually knows how lightning works. Nice format to show video’s. Things will go easier when models actually understand what a photographer is doing in big lines.

The beauty dish makes your light softer. Now, lets take some pictures of ME!

Has anyone tried grilling on it? With a grid on it’s begging for some fire from below. Mmm. Burgers

    Thanks for the info …
Thanks for the info john, i saw also that Hensel sells a 40 degree and speedtron sells a 30 degree but the prices are crazy..In some cases the actual grid costs more than the Dish itself….But the grid does give u a diff look….More videos plzzz ; )

To the best of my …
To the best of my knowledge, Profoto only makes 1 grid for the beauty dish. It is a 25 degree grid. You can buy it at B&H Photo.

The dish works well without the grid also however. So if you buy a dish it is probably best to learn to shoot without the grid first, and then add the grid later. That way you initial financial investment will be less.

Agreed! Great review. Model had a good delivery and was amiable. I just got a Mola Demi dish. Can’t justify Profoto cost yet.

Not to put too fine a point on it. Shadow is not inherently ugly. What you do with it can be beautiful or ugly.
