What’s the Difference Between People and Portrait Photography?
Posted on June 29, 2010 by Ed
It’s probably a dumb question, but I’m not quite sure how to tag the photos on my blog. Some will have 1-4 people in it, and others will have 20. Do the distinct portrait ones get tagged as "people" also? And are the distinct people ones get tagged as "portrait" also? I’m OCD and this is really bothering me.
so is portrait photography also people photography? and people photography is just photography of a LARGE group of people?
Portrait photography implies a formal setting with strict control over the lighting by the photographer and some good direction to get the best "look" from the subject.
People photography, while it can include portraiture, is more about candid shots of people at work or play.

portraiture to me is an image of a person or small group like a family where the photographer uses lights and their skills to make an image
people photography is more photo taking than image making to me

Circumstances matter. Is the shot of 4 people a family that posed? Then it’s still a portrait. Perhaps a group portrait?
If it’s a street shot of random people, then it could be a group shot.
